Why is your Vodka Filtered? Filtering is a process that removes unwanted compounds and substances from the material being filtered. When it comes to vodka, distillers usually filter through activated charcoal, but they also use virtually anything under the sun (it’s called marketing). Why you ask??? Well the Unfiltered Truth is that most distilleries can’t afford or decide not to fully distill the heavy alcohols (tails) out of the product. Filtering is a cheap and easy way of removing some of the remaining high volatiles (organics and fusel oils), while not touching the lighter alcohols (heads). These include rubbing alcohol, wood grain alcohol, acetate, aldehyde etc... The Unfiltered Truth is that these Distillers need to remove as much of these unwanted compounds and substances as they can….this is the reason that they tout the number of times their Vodkas are Filtered. It’s also the reason that they like you to keep their products in the freezer. If it’s really cold, the gasses won’t go up your nose when you drink it, letting you know how much crap they left in it. The Unfiltered Truth is that the number of times a Vodka is filtered is an indication of the inferior cuts done during Distillation. The Distillation Process employed in the making of our Unfiltered Vodkas is immaculate. We’re a bunch of geeky, perfectionist engineers,,,,,,,,,,, you shouldn’t expect anything less. We designed and built our own stills to ensure we would have the proper tools to do the necessary cuts during distillation. The stills along with years of accumulated knowledge and good science allow us to produce a superior product that is never filtered,,,,,, there is simply no need. We already threw away all of the bad nasties during distillation…!!!! We Distill in small batches and hand craft because it’s the right thing to do and we can. That’s the Unfiltered Truth!!!! If your vodka is filtered, ask yourself, what it is that they have to filter out,,, and what did they do with the rest of the crap that activated charcoal doesn’t take out? Of course a really good question to ask yourself might be; “Why would they filter at all if they have a still?”
